Fernando Silva

Fernando Silva is currently a Professor of Computer Science at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto (FCUP), Department of Computer Science. He studied Applied Mathematics at the University of Porto (UP) and obtained his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Manchester, UK (1993). In 2007, obtained the Habilitation in Informatics from the New University of Lisbon. He currently is a member of the Scientific Council and also of the Representatives Council of FCUP.

In 2007, he founded the Center for Research in Advanced Computing Systems (CRACS) that he leads. CRACS, since 2014, is an integrated center of INESC TEC. He is a member of MAP-i scientific board, the Doctoral Program in Computer Science of the Universities of Minho, Aveiro and Porto (was the Director in 2008/09 and 2013/14), is the PI for the Dual PhD Degree in Computer Science between MAPi and Carnegie Mellon University, representing UP, and is Co-Director for Advanced Computing in the UT Austin-Portugal initiative. He was head of the Computer Science Department from 1/2006 till 12/2007, and was a member of the first Ethics Committee of the University of Porto (2008/12), representing the sub-committee for the exact-sciences and technologies.

His primary research interests are in parallel and distributed computing, middleware and peer-to-peer systems, mobile edge clouds, programming languages, algorithms for motif discovery in complex networks, and applications in information mining. He has advised 10 completed PhD theses in these areas. He has been involved in several competitively funded projects, and currently leads HYRAX (Crowd-Sourcing Mobile Devices to Develop Edge Clouds), and Authenticus (Author Name Identification in Scientific Publications).
